Passage Commons: Single-Parent Housing in Oakland

Challenging the conventional mid-rise building type, this project redefines urban living by integrating the existing site with the proposed architecture and its users. The design features two slender volumes that create urban walls, framing a new vibrant passage between them. The resulting building massing maximizes the limited sunlight available amidst the towering neighboring structures. Existing trees are strategically incorporated to guide the building’s form and enhance its connection to the landscape. The structure adopts a grid system, which is translated into a façade of solids and voids. These voids serve as communal spaces, acting as dynamic windows that connect residents and offer views of Lake Merritt. Shared amenities for residents – such as community kitchens, co-working spaces, and shared laundry spaces – create community and a support network for single parents.
