The Kansas Project: Adaptive Reuse of Chattanooga Lookouts Baseball Stadium
How can we use the Chattanooga Lookouts Baseball Stadium on Hawk Hill that no longer serves its main purpose without demolishing it? I believe this can be accomplished through adaptive reuse of the site and structures that already exist and can be repurposed into a new outdoor recreation facility. This facility will tie directly to the existing River Front and specifically the River Walk. It will seek to be a gathering place that ties the urban environment and natural environment together. In a location that could easily become another part of the concrete jungle of the downtown area, I believe this site would be better served to provide a green space for the citizens of Chattanooga. It will seek to embrace the ecology through bio retention and river preservation efforts to reduce erosion and pollution. By reusing many of the materials of the existing structure this project will reduce waste. It will incorporate natural aspects into manmade structures to enhance the lives of those that interact with it giving them many opportunities to break away from the rigorous demands of downtown life. It will provide a connection with nature and the river that will provide a good balance between work and life for all. Through active acts of recovery this project will seek to recover both the history of the site and the reclamation of existing materials to transform this ballpark into a community gathering place that promotes the Health, Wellness and Resiliency of Chattanoogans all over the area.
