Place Jean Paul II Square Park in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire

This project proposes an inviting, multifunctional urban park in Yamoussoukro’s Assabou neighborhood, adjacent to the Mayor’s Office. The 18-acre site is reimagined as a connected civic landscape that supports recreation, community gathering, ecological restoration, and public identity. By removing the street that divides the area in half, the design creates a unified park with three clear entrances, shaded pedestrian routes, and parking located outside the square. Ecological strategies include rain gardens along Boulevard Mamie Adjoua, permeable surfaces, imported fertile topsoil, and underground storage for rainwater and wastewater to support irrigation, restrooms, and fountains. Native shade trees and medium-height multi-trunk trees improve comfort, reduce wind, mitigate heat, and restore biodiversity. Recreational features include a jogging track, skate park, playground, restrooms, lighting for nighttime use, and a balanced mix of softscape and hardscape. Memorial statues of Pope John Paul II and Félix Houphouët-Boigny connect the park to the city’s civic and cultural history.
