I am passionate about design and love problem-solving. Any issue at hand is an opportunity to learn, grow, and adapt. As a Student Director on the board of American Institute of Architects San Francisco (AIASF), I advocate for a stronger connection between students and the architecture profession. I lead efforts to strengthen studio culture in my role as a board member at the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) chapter at the Academy of Art University.

Folded Roof: Cultural Center and Library in the Fillmore District

The Folding Roof is a Japanese Cultural Center and Library that utilizes a rigorous system of trusses to organize spaces. The building’s central green space has a porous boundary with the adjacent program areas. Located in the Fillmore District in San Francisco, the community center celebrates Japanese Culture at the Western Addition Library. The multi-use library educates community members, and students in the neighborhood, of the history, traditions, and practices. Spaces for learning and expressing culture are organized in two building volumes connected with a central void. The central void serves as the green space and is flanked by buildings to the north and south. An undulating truss system supports the roof of the central void and changes based on program and site conditions to modulate light. Program activities, such as children’s area or the reading spaces, spill out into the central void taking advantage of the temperate climate in San Francisco. The spacing of the roof truss establishes the building module including on the façade. The narrow structural bay at 10 ft, the width of two envelope panels, establishes the scale and texture of the interior and exterior spaces. A Kalwall system and recesses in the envelope act as levers to adjust the amount of natural light in interior spaces.
